KJ Motorsports Update #21 Race #37 & #38

8/17/15

Friday we went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway and set 2nd fast time to start us on the pole of the 2nd heat. We led every lap but the most important one and KC Burdette got us at the line. So we had to start 4th in the feature and pretty much rode around there in 4th all night and finished a distant 4th.
Saturday we went to I-77 Speedway for the Kenny Carr Memorial Race where they had 31 modifieds. We set 3rd fastest time and we also won the 3rd heat, to start us 3rd in the feature. We finished another 4th on the weekend. But I’ll have to say that I was still happy for Booger Garnes driving Nick Carr’s modified won the race. It was a moment that I just knew was meant to be and I’m glad I got to witness it. Congrats to that team on the win!

This weekend we will be at Atomic Speedway all weekend. Friday and Saturday is 2 complete shows for the World of Outlaw Late Models and our class and Sport Mods. I will also be there Sunday giving rides to those that signed up to ride in a 2 seater modified with me. I’m so looking forward to this. So we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition I want to give a shout out to Frankie Hall, who laid under my car most of the day Saturday in an effort to make some changes to improve the handling. When we get to I-77 it proved to be much better for me and Frankie played crew chief all night with Chad and Brian getting the car ready. It was nice not to have to think about what changes to make and just drive. So thank you very much Frankie!

KJ Motorsports Update #20 Race #35 & #36

8/10/15

Friday we went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway for the 7th Annual Greg Schilling Memorial race. 48 cars showed up and a record setting crowd was on hand. Frankie set 24th fastest time and started 4th in heat #6. He went on to finish 2nd to start him 12th in the feature. But issues would hit him early, for something came up into his fan and took out his fan and radiator. We were able to set 6th fastest time to start us on the pole of heat #6 and we won the heat and that put us in the dash and started 3rd. I spun running 4th and we wound up finishing 6th. We started 6th in the feature and it wasn’t long and I realized something was wrong with the car. We broke a pull bar and I was just riding it out til the end. We wound up finishing in 7th place, but there were 2 cars disqualified and that gave us a 5th place finish. Congrats to Corey Conley, driving for Jr. Nolan on the win! Thanks to Legendary Hilltop Speedway and all of the sponsors that helped to make this race a success.
Saturday we loaded up and headed to run the topless race at Ohio Valley Speedway. Frankie set 3rd fastest time and they inverted 4, so he started 4th. He spun on the first lap, but brought it back to a 2nd place finish to start him 6th in the feature. But engine troubles would scratch him from the feature. Frankie has just had no luck this year thus far. We set 5th fastest time and we started 3rd in the heat and finished 2nd to Jesse Wisecarver to start us 5th in the feature. I spun on the first lap in turn 3 in front of the field and got clobbered. Not only did I tear our stuff up, I tore up others as well. Surprisingly though, although we had some suspension damage, our car was still able to continue. We charged from the tail to 3rd and was racing KC Burdette and Jason Brookover but near the end of the race I pulled off with engine troubles. Fortunately we found the engine trouble to be minimal. #6 spark plug wire had fallen off. Can’t remember that ever happening before, but it’s unfortunate but also lucky that is all it is.

At this point and time, I really have no clue what our plans are for this weekend. But where ever it is, we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition I want to give a shout out to Frankie Hall, Brian Dennewitz, Tim Cooper, Chand Nelson, Kendall Hodge and Bob Booth for all the hard work they did on Saturday when I was working the Greg Schilling golf outing. These guys had a busy day and without them, I wouldn’t have been able to race. I’m extremely lucky to have the help and dedicated crew and friends that I have. So thank you very much!

KJ Motorsports Update #19 Race #33 & #34

8/4/15

Friday we went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway where we set 3rd fastest time. We went on to win the 3rd heat, in which the top 2 went on to a dash. They had fans draw for our starting position and I got #4. On the first start, James Dennis spun before one lap was in and that moved us to the outside pole beside KC Burdette. We went on to win the dash to start us on the pole of the feature beside Jesse Wisecarver. Jesse got the early lead and we kept pressure on him the first several laps, but he eventually got a lead on us and we finished 2nd. We are due for a win at Legendary and I hope it comes soon!

Saturday we went to Atomic Speedway for $2,000 to win. We set fast time and had to start 4th in the heat because they invert the top 4. We went on to finish 2nd to Fireball Pinkerton, to start us 4th in the feature. We were able to take the lead on lap 2 and never looked back to pick up our 4th win of the year. All 4 wins have come at Atomic Speedway.

This Friday we will be “topless” at Legendary Hilltop Speedway for the Greg Schilling Memorial Race and Saturday we will be “topless” again at Ohio Valley Speedway. So we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition I want to give a shout out to the Greg Schilling Memorial Foundation. The family of Greg Schilling has established this memorial foundation to financially assist the needs of families that have a burden. Whether it be sickness, storms or some kind of hardship. It has been an amazing thing to be a part of. The foundation also supplies 2 scholarships; one at Waterford High School and the other at Fort Frye High School. Please try to attend Friday’s race and buy a t-shirt, a memorial sticker or make a donation to support this great memorial fund! Also, don’t forget to buy your chance to win a ride in a 2 seater modified with me. Thanks to Junior Nolan at 2 Brothers Motorsports for bringing this 2 seater in helping to raise money for the memorial fund.

KJ Motorsports Update #18 Race #31 & #32

7/27/15

Friday we went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway and Frankie was back out in his new car. He was 8th fastest in qualifying and started 3rd in his heat and finished 4th. He started 12th in the feature and I believe he finished 11th. We were 7th fastest and started 3rd in our heat behind fast qualifier Darrin McDonald and outside of him was Jason Brookover. We finished 3rd and both of them were side by side and all we could do is follow. We started 7th in the feature and fell to 8th on the start, but slowly picked our way up to 3rd and desperately needed a caution, for the car was coming on real good. But when you want one, there won’t be one and we finished a respectable 3rd.

Saturday we went back to Muskingum for a rain out race and to run Mr. Jarrett’s street stock for $1,000 to win. Mr. Jarrett drew us a #19 pill to start us on the outside pole of heat #1. But in hot laps, the power steering pump crapped itself. So they ran the line out and right back in the steering box to bypass the pump. I went out and it was too difficult to drive, so I pulled off. The plan in the feature was to make a few laps and pull off. But before going out, Mr. Jarrett said if it looks like they’re dropping out, stay out and see what kind of finish we get. So I did as the boss said and stayed out there man handling it, which was easier in the feature with the dryer track conditions. In the end we got us a 10th place finish. . . He has a really good car and I really would have liked to have been able to race it to see what we could have done, but thanks to Mr. Jarrett for the opportunity. In our mod we were 10th fast and started 5th in the 2nd heat race. The top 3 finishers were doing a redraw for where we would start in the feature. We were able to make a last lap pass for 3rd. On the redraw, we got the last pill which of course was #6, to start us 6th in the feature. We fell to 8th, but as the race got going, we came to 4th and as long as I hit my marks, the car was good and making progress. We were working on making a pass for 3rd but the marks I spoke of, I totally missed in turn 3 and went off the track bringing out the caution and was sent to the tail. We brought it back to a 7th place finish. My screw up cost us a top 3 finish. . . .

Weekend plans are not confirmed as of yet, but I will post where will we be once we know what our plans are. So wherever that is, we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition I want to give a shout out to all of our fans. Even when we are not winning, we still get the support and shown appreciation for us being on the track. Although this has not been a stellar year thus far, the fans are still supporting us like we win every week. I sure do appreciate each and every one of the fans from the youngest to the oldest. THANK YOU!

KJ Motorsports Update #17 Race #27, #28, #29 & #30

7/22/15

First off I want to apologize for getting behind on my updates. I’ve just been busy and don’t really have much more of an excuse. But on July 10th and 11th we went to Tyler County Speedway for the Renegade of Dirt Mega 100 that was paying $12,000 to win, $1,200 just to start. 66 cars signed in and this race format was different than any other we have done in our area. It was based on passing points and what position we finished in. To get right to the race results, we ran 2 heat races. The first heat we started outside pole and won. The 2nd heat race we started 7th and finished 3rd. These finished placed us 11th in points overall, in which the top 12 was locked into the feature. I was very pleased with our effort with the caliber of cars that were there. But when the 100 lap feature came, we did not make many laps before we had an engine expire. This was Frankie’s Mullin’s engine, so we will be sending it back to get repaired.

Our next race was a rain out race on Thursday, July 16th at Legendary Hilltop Speedway where they had 35 cars. They did group qualifying and we were 2nd fastest in our group behind Jesse Wisecarver. We raced Jesse door to door for 2 laps before a caution came out and Jesse had us at the line. He went on to win and we got 2nd to start us 5th in the feature. We fell back to 8th or so, but fought our way back to a 4th place finish, but not without extensive body damage from a first lap wreck.

Friday, July 17th Coop, Frankie and Brandon Francis spent the day in the garage making repairs to get the car ready to race. We went to Skyline Speedway and we were 5th fastest and started 3rd in the first heat and finished 3rd. Started 5th in the feature and went to the high side and came to a 2nd place finish behind John Burdette. Went the right direction, just not far enough. . .
Saturday, July 18th we went to Ohio Valley Speedway only to get rained out. So we headed on down to I-77 Speedway and somehow Mother Nature went around the track and we were able to race. When we qualified, I went to the high side and it was hammer down on the top and I was turning some good laps. . .or so I thought. . . We were 12th fastest. . . Started 4th in the 3rd heat and moved into 2nd behind Jason Brookover, who wound up dropping out and we went on to get the win and this started us 3rd in the feature. I should make mention the track was pretty rough and that winds up being a factor in the results. We maintained 3rd for several laps, but hit the highside and took the lead. I was trying to hit my marks and avoid the holes and ruts, but I totally could not avoid it in turn 3 and the entire car bounced in the air 3 times and I lost the lead to Kyle Bond in which he went on to win and Booger Garnes in Nick Carr’s car got 2nd and we finished 3rd.
This weekend we will be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday and Saturday we will be going back up to Muskingum County Speedway where we will also be driving Mr. Jarrett’s #15 street stock for $1,000 to win. So we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition, I want to give a shout out Mark Luning. Mark successfully had a cancerous tumor in his esophagus removed and was released from the hospital last Thursday. Many prayers were answered and Mark felt well enough that he and his son Shane showed up to the races on Thursday night!

On a sadder note, my engine builder, Billy Lloyd, lost his wife Sharon on July 11th. Gene Casto lost his mother Pearl Casto on Friday July 17th and just this past Monday, Jeff Burdette lost his dad, Archie Burdette. Please provide continued prayers for all of these families during this time of loss.

KJ Motorsports Update #16 Race #24, #25 & #26

7/7/15

Our weekend started off with a Thursday night race at Tyler County Speedway where they had over 30 mods. Qualifying times were rather close, for 4th fastest time was a 14.3-- and 7th fastest time was a 14.4-- and we were 15th fastest with a 14.5--. That put us starting 3rd in our heat race and we finished 3rd to start us 15th in the feature. We made a couple of small changes and was able to advance to a 6th place finish. Car was moving along pretty good, although 6th doesn’t sound so great, it was going the right direction.

Friday, Coop and I headed to Atomic Speedway for Fan Appreciation night, only to have Mother Nature not be so nice. We got rained out and called back to Legendary Hilltop Speedway, where they had avoided most of the storms. They were running a tad late, so we headed back and got there in time to tack the tail of the 3rd heat. Started 6th and made our way to work on Andy Bond for 3rd, but he and I got together and I spun and went to the tail. We were able to come out with a 4th place finish to start us 12th in the feature. We came up to a 5th place finish. Again, not a great finish, but with where we started, the car was going the right direction.

Saturday we went to Ohio Valley & Frankie debuted his new Shaw car and set 5th fastest time, but during that qualifying run he broke a transmission and that ended his night. We qualified 4th fastest and they inverted the top 4 in each heat race, but we broke an idler arm, which forced us to start 8th in the consi. We won the consi and started 14th in the feature. The car was just a tad tight on entry in traffic and we only made it to a 9th place finish. The car was faster than our finished position, but passing is sometimes easier said than done.

This weekend you will find us at Tyler County Speedway for a Renegades of Dirt Mega 100. This will be a different kind of race in many ways. For there will be 2 heat races and we will get passing points. Based on those points will determine our starting position in either the consi or the feature. The other unique thing is the feature will be starting 3 wide. Now this will make things really interesting and being it is a 100 lap feature, let’s hope racers don’t try and win it on the 1st lap. But come on up and check it out, for their will be a lot of laps logged in over the 2 day weekend.

This week’s recognition, I want to give a shout out toOVDTR.com. Kyle, JT and Lee and the rest of the team at OVDTR brings the racing to the web for those that couldn’t make it. It also provides an opportunity for guys like me that don’t get to see all the racing and it allows me to critique myself and watch all the stupid moves that I do sometimes. A great bunch of guys and be sure to go to their web page or find them on Facebook and give them a like!

KJ Motorsports Update #15 Race #23

6/30/15

We need more rain! NOT!!! Wow, this weather sure has played havoc with us trying to do some racing. We have done some road trips over the past 2 weekends, but only got to race once and that was at Skyline Speedway this past Sunday night. Freddy Carpenter and team opened the track up and by the car count; you could certainly tell guys were itching to race. They had 43 mods and we were 3rd quick. Started on the pole of the 3rd heat beside Roy Roush and we got the win to start us 3rd in the feature, with Kevin Morehouse and Travis Dickson on the front row and Tommy Powell beside us. We went 20 laps, green to checkered and we finished 3rd. All in all I was pleased with our performance and feel we can improve the car at Skyline for our next trip there.

Just a little bit of news update. Frankie has his current Shaw car up for sale for $10,000 minus engine and transmission. Give us a shout if you have interest and we’ll help with set up in anyway we can. Frankie will be bringing out his brand new Shaw in the very near future. So stay tuned!

This weekend is a 3 day race weekend and we plan to be at Tyler County Speedway on Thursday night, then to Atomic Speedway on Friday night and on Saturday we plan to be at Ohio Valley Speedway. So we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition, I want to give a shout out to Octane Race Products and Poske’s Performance Parts and all of the guys and gals that work out there. There isn’t anything you can’t find out there that is for a racecar and Octane Race Products is designed to provide quality product and an affordable costs compared to some brand name products. If you get a chance stop out and if you’re not needing parts, pick you up a t-shirt or hoodie and tell them we sent ya.

KJ Motorsports Update #14 Race #21 & #22

6/14/15

Friday we went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway and we were racing Frankie’s car. We set 8th fastest time with a 15.61 out of 27 cars. But 3rd fastest was a 15.495. So the times were really close. We started outside pole of heat #4 beside Larry Bond. We went on to win the heat race and would start 4th in the feature. We jumped into 3rd and ran 3rd for half the race. But Jesse Wisecarver got by us and he went on to pick up another win on the year and we wound up finishing 4th. Was relatively pleased with Frankie’s car and we plan to run it again next weekend.

Saturday we were heading to Atomic Speedway, but Mother Nature redirected us and we intended on going to Ohio Valley Speedway. But, I was willing to bet that Mother Nature was not finished and sure enough, the Valley cancelled too.

This weekend we plan to be at Atomic Speedway on Wednesday night, Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Thursday & Friday night and then back to Atomic Speedway on Saturday. So, there is plenty of racing and we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition, I want to give a shout out to Charlie Schilling of KBI Real Estate. Check out their web site at www.kbirealestate.com and you just might come across something that you didn’t even know you were looking for. If you find you have a need and they haven’t offered it, drop them a line and maybe they can help and tell them we sent ya.

KJ Motorsports Update #13 Race #19 & #20

6/7/15

Friday we went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway for the Greg Schilling Memorial Qualifier race that was paying $999 to win. Frankie qualified 12th fastest and started 3rd in the 4th heat. He was running 3rd before losing the handle on the car. He opted to park it for the evening, rather than go out for the consi.

I qualified 4th fastest and started on the pole of the 4th heat, beside Larry Bond. We got the jump on Larry and went on to win the heat to start us 4th in the feature. I felt pretty good about being in the hunt for a win. I made a shock change and the car was just a little too tight. It would not rotate in the middle of the corner and when I would force it to turn, then it would be lose. I was running 5th and was getting pressured by Tanner Wilson. I felt like I had a right rear tire going down and I wound up pulling off. But. . . . no flat tire. So yet another DNF for the year.

But a highlight of my night, was that Jr. Nolan of Two Brothers Motorsports brought down his 2 seater modified and I got to give 3 people a ride. They all seemed excited afterwards. This was done to help promote the upcoming Greg Schilling Memorial race on June 26th at Legendary Hilltop Speedway. Jr. will again bring down the 2 seater and all the proceeds will go to the Greg Schilling Foundation.

Saturday we went to Muskingum County Speedway. We set 5th fastest time and started beside Nathon Loney. Nathon bonzied to the high side of one and I had to brake check, but that gave him the lead and we finished 2nd. But they redrew the top 2 and Coop got us a 3. We were running 3rd thru most of the race and around lap 20 our fan blade broke and then the water pump broke and then took out our radiator. So, another DNF. This has been a DNF filled season thus far. I want to give a shout out to and thank Brandon Francis for giving us a hand tonight!

I was also hired to drive Mr. Jarrett’s #15 street stock. I drew pill #66 and his daughter Lindsay said I was fired from drawing pills. (not my first time being fired) Started 6th in the heat and came to 3rd, but slipped up a bit and wound up finishing 4th. Started 8th in the feature and came to 3rd. But with 7 laps to go the left front ball joint broke and the tire laid in against the frame. It was a handful to handle, but we did manage to bring home a 4th place finish. I thought we were going to have a shot at the win before it was over with, but luck just wasn’t on my side. Thanks to Mr. Jarrett for asking me to drive!

This weekend we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday driving the 8H of Frankie Hall. Then on Saturday we will be at Atomic in our familiar 1J! So, we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition, I want to give a shout out to Steve Mollendick. Steve has been stopping by and picking dad up and getting him to the races. Steve is a good friend of dad’s and has been for many years now. But things wasn’t always so hunky dory with dad and Steve. Back in the day, Ohio Valley Speedway was called Smedley’s and Steve Mollendick was Smedley. Well, believe it or not, dad raised some cane back in his day and promoters just dreaded to hear from dad, cause he normally had a complaint of some sort. Well, when dad was mad, he didn’t care who you were, your’e going to hear about it. One night, he chewed on the entire Mollendick family. Needless to say, the next week a registered letter showed up in the mail that stated Gene Johnson was barred for life for Smedley’s Speedway. Not a week, not 2 weeks, but FOR LIFE. . . LOL I guess it’s a good thing for dad that it is no longer called Smedley’s. LOL But they have both buried the hatchet and are great friends. I know my mom is grateful to Steve for spending the time he does with dad. Thanks a lot Steve!!!!!!

KJ Motorsports Update #11 Race #14, #15 & #16

5/26/15

Frankie and Brian decided to head over to Jackson County Speedway on Friday night. He started out side pole of heat #2 and won the heat race. That started him outside pole of the feature. Track slickened up a bit and he ran 2nd for a good while until he slipped up in turn 2 and gave the bottom line up. He wound up with a 3rd place finish. He opted to take the rest of the weekend off.

Friday I went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway where we set 4th fastest time out of 27 cars. This started us on the pole of the 3rd heat beside Robbie Evans. We went on to get the heat win to start us 4th in the feature. We moved into 2nd fairly quick and was battling for the lead with Jesse Wisecarver. Unfortunately we made contact with Jesse off of turn 2 and our right front spindle broke, giving us another DNF for the year. The car was really good and we had a shot at a win.

Saturday we went to Tyler County Speedway for the kickoff of the Let It Ride 55 weekend. We qualified 4th in our group and they inverted the top 4 in each heat. That started us 3rd in the first heat race. We wound up finishing 3rd and that would start us 7th in the feature. We had to finish in the top 6 in order to be locked into the big show on Sunday. Well we just did finish 6th to put us in a dash on Sunday. Sunday we went back and they drew pills for the dash line up. I got the last pill and that started us 6th in the 2nd dash. We moved into 3rd right off the bat and finished 3rd to start us 6th in the big show. After a combination of some poor choices I made in driving and poor choices on set up changes, we finished 8th! Glad we were in the big show, I just wish we could have advanced, rather than went backwards.

We plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday and then back to Atomic Speedway on Saturday. Anxious to get back and see our Highside Fans! So, we hope to see you all there!

This week’s recognition, I want to give a shout out to Tim Cooper and Chad Nelson for all the effort they give. They are at the shop and the tracks as much as they can and I couldn’t do it without them. But this weekend, I also got to give a shout out to Kendall Hodge, Jimmy Fordyce & Donnie Adams of Lightning Chassis. Kendall came out Saturday morning and helped me get the car back together and Jimmy and Donnie spent Sunday with me, going thru the car and getting it set up. It takes a lot of work to race and I have to give a lot of credit to a lot of people for helping me to what I love to do!

KJ Motorsports Update #10 Race #13

5/18/15

Frankie took the weekend off to catch up on business and house stuff. Owning your own business has its positives and negatives. Frankie puts business first and that’s what keeps racing going. . .

Friday I went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway where we set 2nd fast time again and started on the pole of the 2nd heat beside Ronnie Mayle. We went on to get the heat win to start us on the outside pole of the feature beside Jesse Wisecarver. I was able to stay to the outside of Jesse for about 2 laps, but once he cleared me, he was able to pull away. He could get in the throttle quicker than I could in the middle of the corner. Robbie Evans was making the lower side work and I had to move down to maintain some drive, for the high side lost some bite. We went on to finish 2nd and the car was good, just Jesse was better. So we have some homework to do to get faster and we will.

Saturday we were all ready to go to the Valley, but Mother Nature cancelled those plans. So I got the car ready for Atomic and was loaded and on my way to pick Chad up, but got the text that they cancelled as well. So then it was plan C and head to Tyler. I got back to the garage checked the radar and talked to a few guys and made the decision not to make the road trip. Well, of course they got the races in and were done in plenty of time to beat the rain. A weather forecaster, I AM NOT!

Got some things to do this week and then we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday and then head on up to Tyler County Speedway for the Renegade of Dirt, Let It Ride 55 on Saturday and Sunday, paying $5,555 to win. So, we hope to see you all there!

This week’s sponsor recognition, I want to give a shout out to Tom and Pam Lemon. Tom and Pam have become faithful followers of KJ Motorsports, but also follow many racers in the area. They are true dirt race fans and I appreciate all they do for our team and most importantly, their friendship!

KJ Motorsports Update #9 Race #11 & #12

5/12/15

Frankie opted to start his weekend off at Carolina Speedway with Jason Brookover on Friday night. Frankie’s night unfortunately started out with problems. He got into the wall pretty hard in qualifying and tore up everything on the right front. Tom Lemon jumped into action and he and Frankie started replacing parts. Fortunately, Jason had enough parts to get him back on the track in time for the feature, but Frankie pulled off to give him a 15th place DNF.

Friday I went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway where we set 2nd fast time to start us on the pole of the 2nd heat beside Ricky Venham. We went on to get the heat win to start us on the outside pole of the feature beside Larry Bond. On the first start, Larry got the jump on me, but a caution came out. So on the 2nd start, I got the jump on him, but another caution came out. This time, we went single file and that put Larry in the lead. We were close, but were unable to make the pass and we had to settle for a 2nd place finish. I was real happy with the car though and it is starting to come around.

Saturday we took off for Wythe Raceway in Wytheville, Va for a Renegades of Dirt show and that is where we met up with Frankie and Jason. Also in attendance was my hero Dustin Jarrett and my legion of fans (as he called it). This was a big and fast track with a ton of banking. Frankie and I both struggled in qualifying and the heat race, starting us 15th and 17th in the feature. I pulled off early and Frankie was not too far behind me. It seemed that our engine combination did not like that big track, for we had no straight-a-way speed at all. Both cars handled well, but just wasn’t fast, which made for a real disappointing night.

But the disappointment would not end there. . . For those that know me well, you know we have several road trips stories; well here is another to add to the list. Frankie is driving the Toter and we get 8 miles back into WV on I-77 and the tranny lets loose and we are stuck in the far right hand slow lane with our 4 ways on. There was no berm for us to get off and it’s just a few minutes after midnight. Shortly after we stopped, Jason Brookover stopped and Jordan Riggs did also. Jordan took Coop and Kendal Hodge home and Frankie and I stayed with the toter to wait on a wrecker. After several phone calls to wrecker companies around that area, we were forced to call back up to Parkersburg to Pifer’s and even they were unavailable and by now it’s 2:30 a.m. So we called 911 expecting a State Trooper or someone to stop. Needless to say at 4:30 a.m. a wrecker showed up (a little wrecker) only because he was driving by and wanted to see if we needed anything. Frankie said, yea, a BIG wrecker! So that guy called it in and by 6:30 a.m. a BIG wrecker showed up and towed us to Beckley, where another driver would take us the rest of the way home. So he shows up at 8:30 a.m. to tell us he has to do another run before he can take us home and he doesn’t show back up til 10:30 a.m., then we have to stop in Charleston and then finally head the rest of the way home. By the time we got back and things situated, I got to the house at 2 p.m. Frankie and I got to spend some quality time together and we both must have been wore out because we both complained about one another snoring!

This week’s sponsor recognition, I want to give a shout out to Jeremy and Joie Carr of Carr Auto Glass. Auto glass & flat glass repair & replacement or whatever your glass needs are, give them a call at 740-265-4337 or visit their web site at www.athens-autoglass.com and tell him we sent ya!

With the toter being out of commission and I will have to use my Dodge to tow the big stacker trailer, we will be staying close to home this weekend. Friday we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway and then we will be at Ohio Valley Speedway on Saturday night. So, we hope to see you all there!

KJ Motorsports Update #8 Race #9 & #10

    5/3/15

This past weekend, Frankie had some other commitments to work, personal and family that he needed to tend to, so he took the weekend off.

We went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday where they had 22 cars. We set 5th fastest time and that started us on the outside pole of heat #1 beside fast qualifier Jesse Wisecarver. Jesse took the early lead and we maintained with him for the first half of the race, but had to settle for 2nd. That started us 5th in the feature. We fell to 7th right off the bat, but fought our way back on the bottom to a 3rd place finish. Normally I’m not thrilled with a 3rd, but the car had a good feel for me this night and it went the right direction. I feel we have something to work with now and can be in the hunt for some wins.

Saturday we went to Atomic Speedway for the Dan Reno Memorial and they had 31 cars. We set 4th fastest time to start us 3rd in the dash. We raced John Burdette for 2nd place, but he had the high side and we just couldn’t make the pass. So we started 3rd in the feature. Again raced John for 2nd for a few laps but overheated the right rear tire and once it got hot I was just hanging on. We ran 3rd most of the race, but Shawn Holliday got by us and on the last lap Jason Montgomery got by as well to give us a 5th place finish. I feel we had a good car, but with our tire choice, it didn’t really prove it.

This week’s sponsor recognition, I want to give a shout out to Steve Balderson Construction. Steve not only has Mustang Plaza Car Wash in Mineral Wells, WV, he does concrete work as well. From basement floors, garage floors, driveways, parking lots, etc. If you don’t want to mow it, he can make it concrete. If you need any kind of concrete work, please give Steve a call (304-481-2484) and he’ll get you a quote and tell him we sent ya!
This coming weekend we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday and then we will be heading to a brand new track for us at Wythe Raceway in Wytheville, Va. for a Renegade of Dirt show. So, we hope to see you all there!
Remember, to make this work, support those that support us!

KJ Motorsports Update #7 Race #8

4/26/15

We went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday where they had 26 cars. Frankie set 7th fastest time to start him outside pole of the 3rd heat beside Larry Bond for the 2nd week in a row. Larry got the early lead and Frankie followed to a 2nd place finish. This started him 7th in the feature but he lost the handle off of turn 2 and was put to the tail. He wound up finishing 11th.
I set 8th fastest time and that started me on the outside pole of heat #4 beside Jason Brookover. I took the early lead on the high side and went on to pick up the win. This started us 4th in the feature and I made just two changes that I thought would help us keep up with the track. But when they threw the green and I entered turn 1, I knew the changes had a negative impact on the car. We fell back to a 6th place finish and hindsight, I believe if I had left the car alone, we would have been better off. But I will not be doing those to changes anymore at Legendary Hilltop.
Saturday, Mother Nature won and gave us a night off.
This week’s sponsor recognition, I want to give a shout out to Keith Emrick of K Graphics. Keith has been doing our cars since he purchased the business from Cooper Signs in 1999. Keith does all kinds of signs, from ball fields, to real estate, business vehicles, to store fronts, etc. Feel free to call on Keith at 304-428-2685 and let him quote you a price and tell him we sent ya!
This coming weekend we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday, back to Atomic Speedway on Saturday for the Dan Reno Memorial paying $2,222 to win. So, we hope to see you all there!

KJ Motorsports Update #6 Race #6 & #7

    4/19/15

First off, I want to thank Frankie, Coop, Brian and Chad for getting the racecar ready while I was out of town all week. Couldn’t have raced without ya!
We went to Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday where they had 23 cars. Frankie set 4th fastest time to start him beside fast qualifier Larry Bond. Larry got the early lead and Frankie went into turn 3 and got nudged and he spun. They put Frankie to the tail and he managed to get back to finish 3rd. That started him 7th in the feature but got caught up in a wreck which gave him a flat tire and a DNF.
I was able to set 3rd fast time and that started me on the pole of heat #3 beside Kyle Bond. I took the early lead running the low side, but Kyle found a line clear at the top and he was able to take the lead and the win. This started us 6th in the feature and was able to make it to 4th and did pass for 3rd once, but a caution came out and we were put back to 4th. I had nothing for the top 3 and was trying to hold off Nick Corbitt for 4th. But I lost the handle in turn one and if it wasn’t for Nick, I would have spun out. But he came by and was able to straighten me out and we did salvage a 5th place finish. Still not happy with how the car is performing.
Saturday went to Atomic and we had to rely on pill draw. Lisa Cooper drew Frankie #25 and that started him 3rd in the 2nd heat. On the first start they had a caution before one lap was in. The pole sitter was the caution, so this moved Frankie to the pole. Frankie was able to get the lead and the win to start on the outside pole of the feature. The track got very slick and he wasn’t quite dialed in the way he needed to be, but the car was better than it has been. He faded to a 7th place finish and more seat time and learnings on the modified.
Saturday morning, spent some time with the car and making changes. We found a mistake of mine and we were hoping that this is what has kept the car from performing. Maddy Cooper drew my pill and she got me #12 to start us on the outside pole of heat 1. We went on to get the win and that started us on the pole of the feature right beside our own teammate, Frankie Hall. We got the early lead and fought off hard challenges from Greggie Oliver driving the Kevin Dulaney owned #20 and we were able to hang on to the win, to get our 2nd for the year.
This week’s sponsor recognition, I want to give a shout out to Joe Schilling of JS Enterprises. Joe has been with us for several years now and Joe also built our “garage mahall” in 2008. Joe and his team can do renovations, roofing jobs, new construction, barns, pole buildings, etc. If you have a construction need of any kind, give Joe a call at 740-984-0203 and tell him we sent ya!

This coming weekend we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday, back to Atomic Speedway on Saturday. So, we hope to see you all there!

KJ Motorsports Update #5 Race #5

4/13/15

Mother Nature won out again on Friday night, but Saturday made for another good race day!

28 mods were on hand and Frankie got 11th fastest time and this wound up being a good thing, for they inverted the top 4 in each heat to start him on the pole. The track was slick and Frankie said he lit the tires up on the start and the car jumped sideways. As he got down into turn one he was hit from behind and he spun, but other cars had spun bringing out the yellow. Complete restart and this time Frankie was able to get 2nd after turn 2 but faded as the race went on to finish 4th. This started him 11th in the feature and he faded back to a 15th place finish. He is still adjusting to the 8” rubber and the set ups as to what he likes and doesn’t like.

I set 2nd fastest time with a 16.07 and Todd Robinson set fast time with a 16.05, so we weren't too far off. But the invert penalized us and we started 4th in the heat. On the start, the pole setter spun his tires and had the car sideways down the front chute. I was going by the outside, but got pinched in the wall and I got into him as he entered turn 1 and he spun out. The yellow was for other cars, so it was a complete restart. As we got one lap in I passed for 3rd, then a lap or two later I passed for 2nd, But by the time I got to 2nd, the leader, Bobby Kitchen has nearly a straight a way lead on me and we couldn’t catch him, so we got 2nd. This started us 5th in the feature. We made some changes to the car and the car was not fast at all. We struggled real bad and wound up finishing a disappointing 8th place.

This week’s sponsor recognition, I want to give a shout out to Hall’s Auto Repair. Frankie and his staff can take care of all of your vehicle needs. They also do fleet work as well. So if you have a business and want your vehicles maintained so they stay running and on the road, give Frankie a shout and he’s be happy to take care of them for you. I also want to thank Frankie for all that he is doing for KJ Motorsports.

This coming weekend we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday, back to Atomic Speedway on Saturday and then again back to Legendary Hilltop Speedway for a Renegade of Dirt show. So, we hope to see you all there!

Remember, to make this work, support those that support us!

KJ Motorsports Update #4 Race #4

4/6/15

Mother Nature won out on Friday night, but Saturday made for a good race day! Legendary Hilltop opted to race on Saturday and they were paying $1,000 to win, so we opted to stay close to home.

18 mods were on hand and Frankie got 8th fastest time. That started him 3rd in the heat #2, but on the first lap he lost the handle entering turn 1 and got hit. He went to the tail and raced a few laps, but had to pull off due to a flat tire. This started him on the tail of the feature but managed to come back to a 7th place finish. He is still trying to get comfortable with the car and plans to make some set up changes to accomplish that.

I set 3rd fastest time and started the pole of heat 3 beside Ricky Venham. Ricky got a run on the outside and took the early lead. We were battling and making for a good race until we both were going for the same real estate entering turn 3. I got on the binders hard and almost spun. Ricky was able to pull away and I couldn’t catch him before the checkers fell and we got 2nd. This started us 6th in the feature and I made a couple of changes. I now know that one of those changes tightens the car up too much. I had to force the car to turn on entry and we managed to get to 2nd, but had nothing for the leader and eventual winner KC Burdette.

I want to thank the Scythe family for their support and friendship, for they were prepared to go to another track, but when they heard our plans had changed, they opted to drive down from Columbus to watch us race! Also want to give a shout out to my hero, Dustin Jarrett. It’s been a while since I got to see him and also got to see his sister Lindsay and Bro In Law Dave.

It’s time I do a weekly sponsor recognition. I want to give a shout out to Jeff Schilling of Schilling Truss and Building Materials out of Beverly, OH. If you are in need of some new trusses, Schilling Truss is the place to call. They also stock many other building materials, go to www.schillingtruss.com or go to their Facebook page and give them a like.

This coming weekend we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway on Friday and back to Atomic Speedway on Saturday. So, we hope to see you all there!

KJ Motorsports Update #3 Race #2 & #3

4/1/15

We took of Thursday morning for Elkin, NC to Friendship Speedway where they were having a Renegades of Dirt show. Thursday was open practice, with Friday being Twin 25’s and Saturday being the big show paying $10,000 to win.

Thursday, both Frankie and I got some practice time and were able to make some changes to the cars and see what worked and what didn’t.

Friday, Frankie qualified 5th in his group and they were taking the top 6 to the heat race. He made a slight change for the heat and it caused the car to be too tight and he faded back to a 13th place finish. This put him starting 9th in the consi and he was able to make his way to a transfer position and started 17th in the feature and was able to finish in 12th.
Saturday he didn’t fare as well in qualifying and was buried in his heat race and had to run the consi. He came up short in the consi as well and did not make the big show. But he did make several changes to try and learn more about the car and he was pleased with that he had learned.

Friday, I was in the same group with Frankie and I qualified 7th in my group and I managed to get into a transfer position for the feature. Started 12th in the feature and was running along about 9th or so and I looped it in turn 1 and collected another car. It took my right side off, but fortunately it was just cosmetic damage and this gave us our first DNF for the year.

Saturday when we went out to hot lap, we were 3rd fastest out of the entire field. Went out to qualify and I missed my mark in turns 1 and 2 and got too high. We wound up qualifying 5th fastest in our group to start us 3rd in our heat race. We finished 3rd and this started us on the pole of the consi. We went on to race the leader side by side for the last 4 or 5 laps, but finished 2nd and that transferred us into the big show, starting 18th. We passed a few cars, but was not making much progress and the track was horribly dusty and was a gamble as to whether the track was clear or not. After the half-way point, I got plowed from behind and decided then to pull off and not take a chance on tearing it up. If I had been advancing positions, I would have stayed out, but unfortunately I wasn’t and now we have two DNF’s in only 3 starts. Not exactly what I wanted for the weekend, but I’ll take some learning’s from the weekend and hope to improve this weekend.

I want to give a shout out to Jeff and Joe Schilling of Schilling Truss and JS Enterprises for making the trip down along with Tom, Pam and Trey Lemon. Thanks to Tim Cooper, Brian Dennewitz, Tommy Worstell and Mark “don’t believe a word he says” Luning for all their help and also thanks to Jason Brookover’s Team for their help as well.

This coming weekend we plan to be at Legendary Hilltop Speedway for $1,000 to win AMRA race. Then on Saturday we will be going back to Atomic Speedway. So, we hope to see you all there!

KJ Motorsports Update #2 Race #1

3/21/15

This year I’ll be typing up the updates for both Frankie Hall ‪#‎8h‬ and as well as my updates.

Well Mother Nature played a role in track prep at Atomic Speedway and the track crew took full advantage of it. They had 18 mods and Frankie drew pill #30 something, which started him 6th in the 2nd heat. Frankie made his way to a 4th place finish in the heat, but not without scraping the wall a bit. I promise, I gave him no lessons. He started 8th in the feature and came away with a respectable 5th place finish. His goal going into the night was to bring the car home in one piece and finish in the top 5, so he was pleased with his first night out.

We drew pill #15 which was just perfect. We started outside pole of the 2nd heat beside Seth Daniels and won it. Then started outside pole of the feature alongside Cody Parker and we picked up our first win of the year. I was real pleased with the new Lightning Chassis.

This win had some meaning to it. I was approached by the brother of Bryan Karshner and he said he had a favor to ask of me. Bryan’s family ran KC Speedway for many years and Bryan had continued to help do the track prep for the next several owners. Bryan lost his life a few weeks back from a long battle with cancer. The favor was to go out there and win it for Bryan. I know that if I wouldn’t have won, that he would not have come back to me and said you let me down. But as it turned out, we did win and I dedicated that win to Bryan Karshner! Bryan knew that I always liked a track that was balls to the walls and Friday, I’m guessing Bryan met up with Mother Nature and called in a favor! Thanks BRYAN!

This coming weekend we plan to leave Thursday morning for Friendship Speedway in Elkin, NC for a Renegades of Dirt show paying $10,000 to win. I don’t expect it, but I hope to see you all there, LOL!

KJ Motorsports Update #1 “2015 Season Getting Closer”

1/29/15

Well, a lot has been going on since the end of 2014 and I’ll do my best to summarize. I’ll start with the biggest news. Frankie Hall of Hall’s Auto Repair has chosen to join our team and he didn’t just join he stepped it up. He has purchased a toter in which he & Brian Dennewitz have been remodeling the inside and it will be getting a new facelift on the outside as well. He also purchased a 28’ stacker trailer to haul both cars. I was able to purchase a brand new Shaw chassis to replace the one that I destroyed of his last year and he will be racing it on a regular basis. Can’t thank Frankie enough for all he has done for KJ Motorsports and looking forward to fun times this summer!

Next on the list of things for 2015 is sponsorship. All 3 Schilling brothers have stepped up as sponsors this year. The Schillings have always taken me in like family since Greg passed away in 2008 and I’m thankful for their friendship and the fact that they have chosen me to display their name on my car. So as you go thru the sponsor list at the bottom of this update, please find all of our sponsors either on the web or on Facebook and give them a shout and let them know you appreciate their support of racing and KJ Motorsports and try and support them when you need their product.

So with sponsorship, we were able to purchase a brand new Lightning chassis from Donnie and Vickie Adams. We put this car together fairly quick so we could display it in the PRI show in Indianapolis back in Dec. We still have our set up stuff to complete on the car, but it is basically race ready. We will also have our Shaw chassis ready to go, in which we have had a ton of success with. We will be in both cars as the season goes along. I have my Billy Lloyd race engines and Frankie has his Mullins race engines. So between the two of us, we should never miss a race night unless of course I do something stupid again and decide to take the scenic route at Atomic like I did not once, but twice last year. . . .

So with that said, as of now, we plan to open our season at Atomic Speedway on March 20th and then the following weekend we will make the trip down south to Friendship Speedway in Elkin, NC for a $10,000 to win Renegades of Dirt show. Hope to see you all there!
